People Australia

This application helps you find and use name authority records in the NLA's People Australia database. Of course, you can also find People Australia data through Trove, or directly through the SRU interface, but I hope this app will make it easier for people entering names in online databases or marking them up in html.

About

This is a work in progress – comments, suggestions and collaborators welcome!

This application uses a Python client library I've written to retrieve People Australia data via the SRU interface. The front end is built using Django and JQuery. There's some background information and more detailed instructions in this blog post.

I'm hosting this myself, so if you find it useful feel free to make a donation. Or better yet, send some work my way.

If you use the bookmarklet, RDFa markup will be automagically generated using the text you selected. Just copy and paste the markup back into your page in place of the original selection.

If you don't use the bookmarklet you'll have to insert the link text yourself.

Important: If you use this RDFa markup in your own pages, make sure you include a FOAF prefix mapping somewhere. Just insert xmlns:foaf="http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/" in a tag that contains your RDFa-ised text.

Biography

WRAGGE, CLEMENT LINDLEY (1852-1922), meteorologist, was born on 18 September 1852 at Stourbridge, Worcestershire, England, only child of Clement Ingleby Wragge, solicitor, and his wife Anna Maria, née Downing. Orphaned in early childhood, Clement was educated at Uttoxeter Grammar School, Staffordshire, and articled to a London solicitor. He went to sea, visited Sydney and in 1876 joined the South Australian surveyor-general's department. Wragge studied meteorology and in 1878 returned to Britain where he established weather observation stations, including one on Ben Nevis, Scotland, for which he received the gold medal of the Scottish Meteorological Society. Back in South Australia he set up similar stations at Walkerville and Mount Lofty in 1884, and founded the Meteorological Society of Australasia in 1886.

Back in Australia, he established observatories on Mt Lofty (SA), Mt Wellington (Tasmania) and Mt Kosciusko (New South Wales) before being appointed Queensland Government Meteorologist in 1887. From there he began issuing weather maps and forecasts for the whole of Australia. When passed over for the post of Commonwealth Meteorologist in 1907 he moved to Auckland and established a private weather service.
